The following topics are a few examples of educational programs available for groups and organizations. Programs about the mind and body can be individually tailored for your group. Whether you are a caregiver now or may be in the future; knowledge can help prepare you. Specialized training for staff and professionals is also available. Presentations marked with an asterisk (*) can be expanded for professionals as half-day workshops.
Specialized Sensitivity Training *
Understand how the body ages and how certain illnesses affect functioning. Experience for yourself what it is like to have a temporary disability. Learn effective techniques to assist those with physical and emotional disabilities.
Self-Care Techniques for the Professional *
This program addresses the stress associated with being a caring professional. The value of caring for ourselves and the benefits for our clients is discussed. Self-care strategies are geared to professionals in different settings.
Preventing the Loss of Self
Short-term caregiving can turn into months or years. Individuals who find themselves caring for their children and their parents, sometimes referred to as the “sandwich generation", often find themselves becoming emotionally and physically depleted. This program provides tips on how to keep balance in one’s life.
Stress and Your Body
Information on how stress can affect you physically and emotionally and methods to overcome the negative effects of stress will be covered. Participants will learn ways to engage the mind, body and the spirit to prevent common health problems attributed to stress.
How to Prepare to Care for an Aging Parent or an Ill Spouse
Material in this program addresses topics such as: safety in the home, planning for changes, declining health concerns, addressing family responsibilities, communicating effectively with the medical system, finding resources, and developing resilience.
Understanding Dementia and Dealing with Difficult Behaviors *
Learn to recognize dementia and gain a deeper understanding of the different types of dementia. Discover ways to deal with an individual who wanders; becomes agitated; experiences “sundowning”, suspiciousness, repetitive behaviors, or has difficulties with bathing, eating, and dressing.
The Mind and the Memory
The Mind and the Memory program will take you on a journey to understand how the mind functions as memories are formed and stored. Learn what affects memory retention and techniques for improving your memory.
Maintaining a Healthy Brain
This program provides an in depth look at the brain and how it functions. Learn about recent medical and scientific advancements that increase understanding of why we do what we do. Obtain tips on how to maintain a healthy brain.
Understanding Clinical Depression *
The difference between “the winter blues” as a Seasonal Affective Disorder, a major depressive episode, and Bipolar Depression will be explained. How medications and other treatment options can be helpful will be discussed. Tips on caring for someone experiencing depression will be reviewed.
Coping with Anxiety
Multiple factors can cause an individual to experience anxiety. Learn ways to distinguish between a medical emergency and anxiety reactions. A brief overview of medical and non-medical treatment options are also provided. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can also be addressed.
Pain Management
How the body and the brain react to pain and methods for interrupting the pain signals will be reviewed. This program will also identify triggers that intensify pain and ways to lessen their impact without medication.
